It was a busy day at Austin City Hall Thursday as council; members tackled some controversial issues.

Among the agenda items, in a 4-3 ruling, the council voted to hire an outside consulting firm to help the city recruit minority firefighters.

There was an exception. The contract is for 18 months and cannot exceed  $280,000.

However, rather than the city manager having the authority to execute four one-year contract extensions as the agenda originally states, any potential contract extensions would now have to come before council for approval.

The city council also took action making Austin's gay pride parade a city-sponsored event.
