Police say a group of burglars is preying on homeowners in and around Cedar Park. There have been 13 in the city since January.
Cedar Park police say burglars are casing the neighborhoods, watching and waiting for people to leave their homes and apartments unattended. Amanda Torres is one of more than a dozen victims.
"We had that false sense of security because we live right behind the police station,” Torres said.
She came home on January 22nd to find her door wide open.
"Everything had been ransacked. The cabinets were opened. All the drawers were open. They were in our house. They know everything. We know nothing about them, who they are. That's really scary,” she said.
Police don't have a solid description of the burglars. They believe there are two or three working together at a time. However, they have figured out the method of operation. Captain Jeff Hayes says the burglars will first knock on doors to make sure the owner isn't home.
"There are a couple of people who have come across these people. We believe that they provide reasons for being there as solicitors,” said Captain Jeff Hayes.
Hayes says if the coast is clear, "These burglars are striking by kicking in the front doors of residences. We believe they're operating a vehicle that allows them to pull into the residence or in the close proximity to use that to transport items they're taking."
Cedar Park isn't alone. The burglars are believed to have hit homes bordering the city limits in Travis County, Williamson County, Leander and North Austin.
Thursday, it was Hayes going door to door. He and other officers are trying to warn homeowners who may be vulnerable.
Walk up Torres' door steps now and you're met with a camera and alarm security signs. She's also taken out a row of hedges that once hid the entryway.
"It's made us very aware of how quick things can change,” said Torres.
Cedar Park police are also sending out officers in unmarked patrol cars to try to catch the burglars in the act. If a solicitor comes to your door and makes you feel uncomfortable, call police. Police also urge you to call if you notice anyone suspicious lurking around.
