FORT HOOD, Texas -- A memorial service for 13 who died in the massacre at Fort Hood last week included a final roll call, 21-gun salute and a bugle playing "Taps."
Army Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr. said those who died "finding meaning in something greater than themselves.
Casey's tribute Tuesday preceded President Barack Obama's at a memorial ceremony for the 13 who died last week.
Casey said that "the feeling of loss was unimaginable" in the wake of the deaths, not just at Fort Hood but throughout the U.S. Army. "It was a kick in the gut," he said, repeating a description he first made shortly after the shooting.
But he said "Americans have always risen to the occasion." He paid tribute to the first responders who rushed to the incident scene, treating the wounded and putting a stop to the slaughter.
He said the men and women of the Army, and those who came to their aid, "epitomize the best that America has to offer."
