Trucks delivering 100 care baskets hit the road to Fort Hood Tuesday morning.
It took hundreds of volunteers and hundreds of donations to get the baskets ready for the soldiers of Thursday’s shooting.
“Anytime there’s any tragedy or any need the community always comes together and to see this is just heart warming,” said Karla Cantu, Capital Area Food Bank.
Each basket is different. Filled with toys, coupons, gift cards, food and hand-made sympathy cards volunteers wrapped them in plastic and loaded the baskets into a trailer.
It took all weekend. Tom Ramsey, the founder of Celebration of Love, put the efforts together.
“I was on the phone to see what we could do,” said Ramsey, “My instinct was taking food and drinks and just be there next to them.”
The warehouse at the non-profit filled people willing to assemble the baskets.
The volunteers came from all over including churches in the area, the Capital Area Food Bank, and a beauty school that sits across the street from Celebration of Love.
“This tragic event was just something you can't ignore. We felt very compelled to try to help out and give back to the soldiers and send some level of comfort to the families in this time of tragedy,” said Oscar Perez of the Academy at Austin.
The baskets will get to Fort Hood in time for Tuesday’s memorial service.
Chaplains at the post are expected to deliver the baskets to the victims of the shooting and their families.
