The shootings at Fort Hood rocked Central Texas. Now many people, including children at one local church, are working to provide as much comfort and support as they can to the soldiers devastated by this tragedy.
Madison Thomas, 16, is among the young people making cards for the injured Fort Hood soldiers and their families. She's hoping to ease their burden and let them know people care.
"When I heard about what happened at Fort Hood, it really hit me hard," she said. "They're not alone in this and people are praying for them and people are there for them."
Each card contains a handwritten note and pictures. Jeff Montgomery, who works with the Promise Land West youth, says each message came from the heart.
"One of the things we talked to them about was you know what happened, now talk to them just like you're talking to them in this letter," he said. "And even though it's paper and pen, it's the words that you put on that's going to give them encouragement and kinda give them something to move on with."
The Fort Hood tragedy has taken an emotional toll on Daniel Sexton. The 15 year-old plans to join the Air Force after he graduates. He says the incident has made his resolve to serve his country even stronger.
"I see people making a sacrifice and I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to make the same sacrifice," he said.
The cards will be hand delivered to the post on Tuesday, along with gift baskets put together by the non-profit group Celebration of Love, which provides food and resources to Central Texas families in crisis.
