Capital Metro’s board Wednesday voted to increase fares in January, but seniors and riders with disabilities will still ride for free.
The base fare for single rides will increase from 75 cents to $1 on Monday January 18.
Initially the fare hike was proposed to start in August 2010, but that date was moved ahead to January.
The transit agency had also proposed charging seniors and riders with disabilities 25 cents per ride, but the proposal met with opposition from many advocates and riders.
Capital Metro said the fare increase was necessary in order to keep up with the rising cost of transportation services.
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) has the authority to veto the single-ride base bus fare within 60 days.
