TRAVIS COUNTY -- A father of three is dead after what Department of Public Safety officials say was a hit and run.
The body of 53-year-old Ricardo Gonzales was found in a ditch in the 7900 block of Coulver Road in Southeast Travis County, west of Onion Creek.
DPS officials aren't yet sure when the accident took place, but they believe it may have occurred late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
“After surveying the scene we saw numerous belongings belonging to the deceased, and we determined, the way the spread pattern of the belongings helped us determine, it was a hit and run,” said DPS trooper Ricardo Lomas.
The family of the hit and run victim tells KVUE they're not surprised someone was killed on Coulver Road. Now, they're heartbroken over a man they say only wanted to be with his family and friends.
“He didn't have a car. He always walked,” said Gonzales' niece Brenda Mirelez.
Gonzales' niece says her uncle did construction work. He and dozens of relatives have lived in the Southeast Travis County neighborhood for nearly 40 years. Family members say every day Gonzales would walk to visit his sisters and other relatives who lived nearby.
Investigators say no one had seen Gonzales for hours before his body was found.
“It’s devastating for the family,” Mirelez said. “And also the people around here, everybody knew him. Everybody knows him. We just want to know if anybody knows anything or saw anything.”
His family says he is divorced and has three children.
Mirelez says it's been a tough few months. Another uncle died a short time ago, so the family was already grieving when Gonzales' was killed.
DPS currently has no leads on who may have been responsible for Gonzales' death. Mirelez says she and the rest of Gonzales' family hope someone will come forward so they can solve the mystery of his death.
