A Texas Senate committee is considering a bill that would allow video surveillance of special-education classrooms.

Senate Bill 1380 proposes the videotaping in self-contained classrooms where children get special services in an effort to promote student safety.

Districts would be required to inform the parents of special-education students before the cameras are installed.

If passed, the law could go into effect this fall, or even sooner under an expedited procedure requiring two-thirds approval from both houses of the state legislature.
