AUSTIN -- The doors are open for the Darrell K Royal auction. Potential bidders are sorting through the collection at the Austin Auction Company warehouse in Northwest Austin. The auction is on Sunday but interested bidders are inspecting the collection before it goes on the block.

The “Royal Collection” is 250 pieces strong. The items are garnering a lot of attention with the passing of the esteemed former Longhorn football coach.

Royal and his wife Edith had planned to auction off personal items and sports memorabilia before his passing.

The collection includes Texas and American flags from Apollo missions. One framed flag includes a photo of an astronaut giving the camera a ‘Hook 'em Horns’ sign.

However, the sports memorabilia locked up behind glass cabinets and carefully laid out on the auction tables is expected to lure in more eyes.

There are championship rings available to bidders. All of them start at $800. Bidding on commemorative footballs signed by Coach Royal start at $500 and official program books begin auctioning off at $50 each.

“Absolutely amazing,” said Chris Mitchell. “I mean it's a neat piece of history and just amazing artifacts and looking at different things that he's had and the heritage of the University of Texas carries here. Amazing. Absolutely beautiful stuff.”

One item Edith Royal couldn’t add to the auction collection is coach Royal’s prized T-Ring. It’s the one he wore daily.

Several bids are already on the table from online bidders. The inspection will continue Friday, Saturday and again Sunday morning before the live auction Sunday afternoon.

Part of the proceeds will go to the DKR Alzheimer's Research Fund named in honor of coach Royal who battled the disease.

He died Tuesday evening. He was 88.
