AUSTIN -- When it comes to Mother's Day plans, Matt McDonald is a very wise man.

"We're doing exactly what she asked to do," he said, "hanging out with the kids. So we went and had breakfast and now we're just running around to some of the parks around town."

A day at the park for mom is exactly what the Thompson's have in mind too.

"Out here enjoying the lake and we're at the dog park taking our dog and I just thought it would be fun to go out and walk around and enjoy the Austin weather," said mother of two, Debra Thompson.

And nothing says "Austin-mom" more than a family run around Lady Bird Lake. Some dads even took the lead, easing a mother's load by pushing the strollers.

A jog is exactly what mother of two Michelle Lopez wanted, proving that a mother's work is never done.

"Keeping the family fun and fit, yes it's very Austin, but it's also good as a mother to just kind of encourage that be fit and have a great time and you can have a great time doing lots of things," Lopez said.

Of course one of the most common ways to tell mom 'thank you' is to get her out of the kitchen and take her out to eat for Mother's Day. And Austin is one of the best places to do that. OpenTable just ranked Austin number five in its top 25 list mom-friendly restaurants for places that are kid-friendly hot spots.

"Yeah, I think it's a great place to be with kids and go out to eat," said mother Gillian Brody. "It seems like a lot of places are available to have kids and they know that that's part of the culture here."

Eating out was the second thing on the new-mom's list. She also got her top wish.

"I was allowed some time to take a shower," laughed Brody.

Whatever the gift, children and fathers spent the day showing their appreciation to Austin moms.
