AUSTIN -- Austin topped a list of the 20 fastest growing cities in America, according to a report published Wednesday by Forbes magazine.

The University of Texas at Austin, and the presence of corporations like Whole Foods and Dell was what made Austin "an economic powerhouse," Forbes wrote.

Austin had a 2.8 percent population growth in 2012, and the report estimated a 2.7 percent growth in 2013.

Austin also saw a 3.1 percent job growth, and according to the report the median salary for local college-educated workers was $63,200.

Three other Texas cities made the list. San Antonio came in at number nine and Houston and Dallas were ranked number two and number three respectively.

According to Forbes, the list was constructed by pulling data from Moody's Analytics on the 100 largest metropolitan areas, giving weight to projected economic growth and subtracting points for low median incomes and high unemployment rates.

"The result is a list of cities that aren't just growing, but creating opportunities," Forbes wrote in its article.
