INDIANAPOLIS -- Austin has been found fit for yet another list.

The annual American Fitness Index was released by the American College of Sport Medicine, and Austin came in at number 11 for 'fittest cities' in the country.

The index measures health and community fitness statuses of the 50 largest metropolitan areas of the U.S. The index also looks at preventive measures, the amount and levels of chronic disease, health care access, and community resources which promote fit and healthy lifestyles.

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area scored 63.6 out of 100, sliding down a spot from last year.

For the third consecutive year, Minneapolis-St. Paul came in first place with a score of 76.4. Three Texas cities to be ranked on the list were Houston at number 43, Dallas at 44 and San Antonio at 48.

“We have issued the American Fitness Index each year since 2008 to help health advocates and community leaders improve the quality of life in their hometowns,” FACSM and Chair of the AFI Advisory Board Dr. Walter Thompson said. “As urban areas attract more and more residents, it’s imperative for cities to create a built environment, fund amenities and form policies that get residents active and encourage healthy lifestyles.”
