TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas -- Police are investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian accident in Del Valle.

The incident happened just after 4 a.m. Tuesday on State Highway 71 near FM 973.

APD Sgt. Michael Brown says a driver in a dark colored pickup truck hit and killed a man as he tried to cross the highway on foot.

Officers say the driver stopped and tried to help the pedestrian, but he died immediately. Several other drivers who saw the crash also stopped. Detectives are interviewing those witnesses as well as the driver to determine if any charges will be filed.

“Detectives [also] look at skid marks. They look at debris from the scene. They're investigating right now so we'll know more details later,” explained Sgt. Brown.

Officers did not immediately know where the pedestrian attempted to cross the street, if he was using a crosswalk or crossing in the middle of the road.

During the investigation officers diverted westbound traffic on Highway 71 to FM 973. Traffic backed up beyond the SH 130 toll road. Around 6:25 a.m. police cleared the scene and opened all lanes of traffic.

Neither the name of the driver involved nor the pedestrian have been released. Police have identified the pedestrian as a man in his 20s.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit detectives at (512) 974-5312. This is Austin’s 55th traffic fatality of 2012.
