Fort Bragg, N.C. -- Staff Sgt. Michael P. Pate received the Silver Star in a ceremony Thursday at Fort Bragg, N.C.
The honor is the third highest military decoration for valor in the United States Armed Forces.
During an enemy ambush in Shobar, Afghanistan in 2012, Staff Sgt. Pate rescued a team member and dragged the wounded soldier back to cover. Under fire, Pate performed surgical intervention to the soldier while continuing to return fire toward the enemy. Pate is a member of Civil Affairs Team 611, Alpha Company, 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne).
Pate graduated from Austin's Bowie High School in 2002 and went on to graduate from Texas State University.
