AUSTIN -- Austin police have charged a mother with intoxication manslaughter following a fatal car accident in Northwest Austin Tuesday.

It happened in the 12500 block of Riata Vista Circle when a the SUV Shea Goss was driving veered to the right, and left the road. The vehicle hit a cluster of oak trees.

All of the three children in the vehicle were transported to Dell Children's Hospital. Two had life-threatening injuries, and one had minor injuries.

Goss, the mother of the children, was transported to St. David's Round Rock with non life-threatening injuries.

One of the children, four-year-old Averee Goss, was pronounced dead at Dell Children's.

Police on the scene found two bottles of prescription pills for Goss in the front seat of the SUV. One was a muscle relaxer; the other medication is used to relieve pain. Police say both medication bottles displayed warnings about how the drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness, and to use care when operating a car.

Police also found various pills scattered about in the vehicle.

When Goss was questioned by police following the accident, she had a hard time staying awake. She could not remember driving or that her children had been in her vehicle with her. Police say her speech was extremely slurred.

Goss was able to communicate that she sees a doctor for chronic head and back pain.

Goss has been charged with Intoxication Manslaughter, a second degree felony and two counts of intoxication assault, both third degree felonies. She is currently in custody in the Travis County Jail.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit detectives at (512) 974-5312.
