Volunteers set out tempting treats Saturday morning, as part of an Austin fundraiser to help victims of the triple disaster in Japan.
They brought out cake balls, cupcake and other baked goods to raise $10,000 for the fundraising effort called Austin Bakes for Japan. The proceeds all go to Americares, a non-profit group that distributes emergency help to the survivors of Japan’s disasters.
“We have an amazing sense of community here particularly in the food blogging community and the local food community,” organizer Shelley Lucas said. “So we knew immediately we could harness that energy.”
Organizers set up five stands across town, including one at 12th St. and Lamar Blvd., and one off E. 53rd. There wasn’t a set price on any of the baked goods. Instead, it was all set on donations.
“I think every dollar can count at this point,” Lucas said.
100 volunteers donated both time and baking skills for the victims of Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis.
“To see your whole life get swept away by that is terrifying at a primal level,” volunteer Sarah Parker said. “I just came, brought my bread and am helping out however I can.”
