AUSTIN, Texas-Sunday is National Plug-In Day and drivers in Austin celebrated with an electric vehicle display in downtown.

Families inspected and tested electric vehicles at Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.

The new Ford Focus Electric was on display for curious drivers. Ford claims it is zero-emissions and gas free and can run 80 to 100 miles before it needs a 3 to 4 hour charge.

Michael Webber was among the drivers checking out the latest and greatest in electric technology.

“I drive a Ford Escape hybrid, I've had it for seven years and I'm looking for my next car electric or natural gas car,” Webber said.

Webber is a University of Texas professor of mechanical engineering. He said Austin drivers are forward thinking and that’s why Chevrolet unveiled its hybrid Chevy Volt in Austin last year.

Ford has also chosen Austin as one of its first markets to sell the new Ford Focus Electric.

“I think that's a sign Austin consumers are ahead of the curve when it comes to transportation choices,” Webber said.
