A teenage burglary suspect is dead after a shootout with Austin police.

Police say two armed teens broke into the Big Lots store off William Cannon and I-35 just before 6 a.m. Friday. They set off the store alarm. Authorities say when the officers arrived, one of the burlgars walked out and began shooting. An officer returned fire, shooting and killing the burglary suspect.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo says his officer had no choice after that suspect walked out wearing a mask and hooded sweatshirt and started shooting.

While paramedics attempted to save the burlgar's life - police say a second armed burglar ran out.

Police searched on the ground and via helicopter for the second suspect. His father turned him in to police custody.

As for the shooting, Acevedo says there is likely dash camera video. He says the officer who fired his gun had turned his camera toward the door when the suspect came out.

The officer will be placed on administrative leave during the official investigation, which is normal procedure. Acevedo called his actions "by the textbook."
