AUSTIN -- One man is dead and another is in custody after a rollover crash in South Austin. Police believe the men were possibly involved in a nearby home break-in.

Around 11:40 p.m. Thursday APD Cpl. Anthony Hipolito says a woman called 911 and told officers someone was trying to break in through her front door on Zill Court near Riddle Road and Old Manchaca Road.

When officers arrived at the house they reported seeing a silver Buick speeding away from the house.

Moments later another officer in the area says he saw the same type of vehicle. The officer turned around thinking it might be the one involved in the break-in. That’s when he says he saw the car run a red light, crash into a tree and roll over.

Cpl. Hipolito says one person died in the crash; another got out and ran away.

Police found the suspect hiding between some nearby houses several hours later.

“We did utilize our canine officers as well as our helicopter,” said Cpl. Hipolito.

Officers took the man into custody and are now talking to him to determine if any others were involved in the overnight break-in.
