A new home for thousands of animals in Austin opened Wednesday morning. The Austin Pets Alive Shelter will help Austin achieve it's no-kill status.
The Austin Pets Alive! Shelter at 2807 Manchaca Road near S. Lamar takes in animals from the Town Lake Animal Center that are considered un-adoptable. The shelter cares for, trains, and then finds new homes for the pets.
The non-profit organization began rescuing Austin animals in 2008. Since then directors say it has saved more than 4,000 lives. Within the shelter's first year, officials expect it will save at least another 1,000 lives.
The shelter opened its doors Wednesday, September 1. It is only housing a select number of cats while the build-out is complete. As construction continues, more animals will be moved into the shelter.
Once complete, the shelter will include private kennels, a fully-functioning veterinary clinic, a parvo puppy recovery center and a care center for kittens under six weeks old.
