AUSTIN -- Construction plans are moving forward at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Austin City Council members will consider a new expansion plan for airport parking on Thursday.

ABIA officials say they're trying to keep up with the growing travel rate.

"You don't want to get to where your airport is full, and then try to build on top of it," explained ABIA spokesperson Jim Halbrook.

The airport wants to build a new parking lot over 64 acres near the terminal. The lot is part of a 25-year plan for parking at ABIA.

Airport officials say they're trying to stay on top of the growing demand. Last year a record number of passengers came through -- about 9.4million. Travel is up another six percent so far this year.

Austin City Council members will meet at 10 a.m. They're expected to vote on the construction contracts by the afternoon.
