AUSTIN -- The owner of the Austin Aquarium is finally talking about the controversial project coming to Austin and allegations of animal abuse in his Portland aquarium.
In a statement issued to the media Friday Vince Covino says, “This controversy has taken on a life of its own and I would like to clear up any misconceptions and misunderstandings.”
The letter goes on to say the Austin aquarium seeks transparency and even says the aquarium will divulge its internal policies to the public.
“Various external industry professionals have visited our facility for preliminary analysis and constructive criticism. We also continue to visit industry forums both online and in person to promote continued learning. As we compare our procedures to industry standards and review the advice of these experts, we will be looking for any changes in protocol that can be implemented to improve the safety and well being of our animals,” Covino said.
Covino said he welcomes any feedback that provides better health for the aquarium animals. The Austin aquarium will make available their husbandry review procedure in 90 days.
The owner also said they Austin community is very important to him and he expects to be held to a “high standard.”
