HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Three students are dead and another is in the hospital after a rollover accident Saturday morning on the Sam Houston State University campus, police said.

According to the Huntsville Police Department, the accident happened at 4:50 a.m. on Avenue I and Bowers. When police arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle had rolled over into the Academic IV building in the 1900 block of Avenue I.

The students who were killed in the crash have been identified as Blanca Espinal, 19, of Houston, and Eric Torres, 22, of San Juan, university officials said. A third student was killed, but has not been identified.

A fourth student, Thomas Roling, 23, of The Woodlands,  was transported to Huntsville Memorial Hospital after being injured in the crash. Roling, an international student, is being transferred to the St. Joseph Medical Center in Bryan.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The university said Saturday’s graduation ceremonies and ACT testing will go on as planned.

SHSU President Dana Gibson issued the following statement: “Our Bearkat Family is deeply saddened by the loss of our students in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to their family and friends during this difficult time.”

A small section of campus between Academic Building IV and the Spivey House will remain closed until further notice, university officials said.

“Thank you all for the outpouring of support. Authorities are still in the process of notifying families,” the university stated via its official Twitter account.
