AUSTIN -- An Austin police officer has been suspended after leaving his loaded service revolver in a city park.

According to a disciplinary memo, Officer Cameron Caldwell was mountain biking while off-duty last month at Walnut Creek Park in North Austin.

Caldwell was carrying an approved off-duty .40 caliber gun in his backpack. The memo says he was moving items from the backpack onto the tailgate of his truck after the ride.

A short time later police were called to the parking lot at Walnut Creek Park after a call to 911 from a person who found the weapon in its holster and turned it over.

Caldwell broke police policy by failing to keep firearms and ammunition “inaccessible to children and irresponsible adults” while in the officer’s possession, the memo said.

He was suspended for one day, which was effective August 30, 2013.
