Washington, UNITED STATES: (FILES)General Norman Schwarzkopf (R), central command forces commander for the "Desert Shield" operations, sits besides US National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft(C) and the White House Chief of Staff John Sununu (L) 15 August, 1990 at the Pentagon, in Washington, DC. New Yorker Magazine reports 23 October, 2005 that Scowcroft has brought out new evidence of divisions in the Republican establishment over the Iraq war and particularly the role of Vice President Dick Cheney. Scowcroft said the promotion of US-style democracy should not be used as an excuse to use force abroad, as he launched a rare open attack on Cheney.
