AUSTIN -- Austin police are investigating what they call a case of road rage. Alfredo Heberto Bernal, 42, is charged with injury to an elderly person. Police say he got into a wreck with 65-year-old David Elliott and lost control.
"As I got out of the truck, he hits me again. I say wait, think what's happening, stop and think, this was an accident," said Elliott.
Elliott tells KVUE he's not an average 65-year-old.
"He was uncontrollable. Nobody could reason with him. You could see it in his eyes. I'm in shape. A normal 65-year-old would still be getting off the pavement. He hit me that hard. He was that rabid," said Elliott.
Austin Police Detective Mike Dunn says it's difficult to track road rage cases, but he is seeing more of them in Austin.
"Traffic congestion and heat adds to the road rage situation," said Dunn.
Dunn says he has one case involving a person spitting on another driver. In a separate case, somebody presented a knife. He says the best thing to do in a situation like Elliot's is to call 911.
"Just get the license plate and a vehicle description, but to follow that vehicle is not a good idea," said Dunn.
Elliot says he is going to be ok, but he wants Bernal to learn from this incident so it doesn't happen again.
"He needs to be held accountable," said Elliott.
Bernal is charged with a third degree felony. If convicted, he faces 2-10 years in prison.
