TRAVIS COUNTY -- An accused murderer is back in Austin. Police extradited 26-year-old Matthew Bacon Thursday afternoon. Investigators say he confessed to murdering 36-year-old David Villareal inside the 360 Condos.
Bacon told the detectives that his mind had been telling him to kill someone for a while.
According to his arrest affidavit, Bacon met the victim at the downtown club Rain on Friday July 12. The two left for another bar, Oil Can Harry’s, before heading to Villareal’s home in the 360 Condominiums.
Detectives say Bacon used a hammer to beat Villareal on the head several times. He said he later slit the victim’s throat to “finish him off.”
According to affidavit, Bacon left the condo and returned with his car to steal electronics from Villarreal's apartment.
Police were called to Villareal’s apartment a few days later when a friend said he had not heard from Villareal and was concerned for his safety.
Investigators tracked a stolen iPhone and discovered Bacon had been arrested in Louisiana on separate charges.
Bacon is charged with first degree murder and is being held in the Travis County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
