BASTROP COUNTY, Texas -- The Bastrop County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a man whose body was found near a burning car.
It happened on Tuesday, just before 9:30 a.m., near 6705 FM 535 and Texas 21 in Cedar Creek.
Bastrop County sheriff's deputies discovered 46 year-old Johnny Arellano laying on the ground 10 feet away from the passenger side of the burning car. There is a neighborhood nearby and some soccer fields.
"There was a lot of policemen walking around going back there, up here, over there," said Maria Santana, who lives near the parking lot.
"We don't know whether it's his vehicle, whether he's the driver, or a passenger. All we know is, he was there," said Bastrop County Sheriff Terry Pickering.
Sheriff Pickering says they're working several leads on the case, but there isn't a lot to go on.
"Basically what we have at this point is really just kind of rumors and stuff from the community. I don't know that we have any real definite leads," he explained.
Arellano has an extensive criminal history, including numerous charges for burglary, escape from custody, and even homicide-involuntary manslaughter.
Sheriff Pickering says in most cases, a homicide is not random, so he doesn't believe the community has anything to worry about.
"It is kinda, kinda scary," Santana said.
Without much information, neighbors can't help but worry.
The sheriff says Arellano did live in the area near the parking lot but recently got evicted and might have been living out of his car. He says the body showed signs of trauma but wouldn't detail exactly what. He hopes to know more in a couple of days -- once autopsy results come in.
