East Texas girl found safe after Amber Alert

UPDATE at 3:20 p.m.: Mount Pleasand police have confirmed Ruby Zavala has been found safe, and the suspect, Jesus Ramirez, is in custody. Authorities say the two were found in the area where police have been searching for the last 30 hours.


MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas -- The Texas Department of Public Safety issued an Amber Alert Sunday evening for a missing 14-year-old girl.

Mount Pleasant police said a woman and two children were kidnapped at knifepoint around 1 p.m. Sunday at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in the East Texas city, located about 100 miles east of Dallas.

According tp police, the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Jesus Ramirez, took the three victims to a house in Titus County. A short time later, he released the woman and one of the children, but fled with Ruby Zavala, police said.

At about 4:45 p.m., police found the vehicle Ramirez was driving wrecked about eight miles west of Mount Pleasant between Winfield and Lake Monticello. A search was under way near the location for Ruby and Ramirez.

Zavala was last seen wearing a white top, blue jeans and tan shoes. She is 5 feet tall, 120 lbs., and has black hair and brown eyes.

Ramirez is described as Hispanic, 5'-9", 165 lbs. with brown eyes and black hair. He was wearing a black baseball cap.

Mount Pleasant police said Ramirez is considered to be armed and dangerous and mentally ill.
