HOUSTON, Texas —Two students said they were upset to see girls walking around with blood on their faces and shirts, so they jumped in on the foot chase that was going on at the college.
Fourteen people were injured in the attack Tuesday on the campus of Lone Star College Cy-Fair in the 9900 block of Barker Cypress.
Witnesses said a man ran down a hallway randomly stabbing students in the Health and Science Center.
Eric Bertrand said he was waiting outside of class when it happened.
“She was bleeding out of her neck quite a bit. I ran to the bathroom, grabbed a bunch of paper towels brought them over to her,” said Bertrand.
“This other girl came out with a hole on her cheek, and I asked her, ‘What happened?’ She said, ‘This guy has been stabbing girls in the cheek.’ I go up to her and say, ‘Where is he at?’ What does he look like?’” said Maida.
Bertrand, Maida and others didn’t think twice when they saw a foot chase with officers and other students and staff.
“We chased him over the bridge, through the arts building. He exited the arts building and entered the south parking lot,” said Bertrand.
“Ryan Ballard grabbed him first and James grabbed his arm and we pushed him to the ground. James stepped on him,” Maida said. “I’m like, ‘Why did you do this?’ And he’s looking at me with a blank stare. He was like, ‘I give up , I give up.”
They didn’t realize that the suspect, 20-year-old Dylan Quick, had a disability.
“When he hit the ground, it popped out of his ear, because he reached over and said, ‘I give up, and touched his hearing aid and said, I’m deaf, I’m deaf,” said Bertrand.
Eric, who is a former Marine, said his training kicked in and he stayed calm.
“If he has some type of psychological disorder, I hope he gets help and gets back on his medication,” said Bertrand.
Maida said he wonders if Quick was bullied or taunted by other college students because of his disability.
“Hey, do something that will make everyone smile. Do a good deed, flex your heart and make sure everyone else is loved,” said Maida.
Bertrand is studying psychology and hopes to become a police officer one day. Maida is studying petroleum engineering. He said the ladies have been praising him.
