PORTLAND, Oregon -- Christian conservatives flocked to national fast food chain Chick fil-A for an appreciation day, supporting its owner's views against same-sex marriage.
While Oregon doesn't have a Chick-fil-A location, one local burger joint made its own statement.
The national chain Hamburger Mary's created the "Hate Free Chicken Sandwich" to counter. It will be the chain's signature sandwich for the month.
"It's modeled after a certain restaurants recipe. This is not copied as a compliment," executive chef Sagamore Blakley said.
General manager Justin HIte said "We just want to add our voice in the increasing number of voices against Chick-fil-A controversy. Some dudes marry dudes, get over it."
All the proceeds from this sandwich at the Portland location will go to Pride Foundation.
Chick-fil-A supporters flocked to the chicken chain's restaurants as the company continues to be criticized for president and COO Dan Cathy taking a public position against same-sex marriage.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared Wednesday "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."
A spokeswoman for the Rev. Billy Graham says the 93-year-old evangelist ate a Chick-fil-A lunch, including a chicken sandwich and waffle fries, at his North Carolina home.
Cathy told the Baptist Press last month that the Atlanta-based company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." Gay rights groups and others answered with calls for boycotts.
Opponents of Cathy's stance have planned "Kiss Mor Chiks" for Friday, asking people of the same sex to show up at Chick-fil-A locations and kiss each other.
