Say goodbye to darkness and hello to longer days as Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend.
Beginning Sunday morning at 2 a.m., we will “Spring Forward” one hour.
With the change in time, officials are reminding residents to take the proper steps to stay safe and live a healthy lifestyle.
Officials say since we’re setting our clocks ahead one hour, now is the perfect time to check and replace batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Fire Department officials offer the following tips for making sure the smoke alarms in your home are maintained and working properly:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button, and make sure everyone in your home knows their sound.
- If an alarm “chirps,” warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
- The manufacturers recommend that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are replaced every 10 years.
- Reminder: Electric wired smoke detectors in residences have battery backups.
- Compressed air can be used to blow out detectors and reduce the chance of false alarms.
Exercise: Officials say the extra hour gives people a chance to go out and do something recreational, like walking or taking up a new sport such as golf or tennis. Working out releases serotonin, a chemical in your brain that boosts your energy, which makes you happier and helps you adjust to new schedules. These things will become crucial in the first few weeks of Daylight Savings Time.
Drive carefully: According to health department officials, there also tends to be an increase in vehicle accident the Monday afte Daylight Savings Time begins. Drivers who lose the extra hour of sleep are more prone to accidents, so drivers are urged to drive more cautiously.
