Army officials say a 13th victim in Thursday’s Fort Hood shooting rampage has died. 30 more are injured. Contrary to earlier reports, the alleged gunman is still alive.
Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, is in stable condition at a civilian hospital. Military and local police are guarding his room.
Officials say an Army police woman shot Hasan four times Thursday afternoon ending the gunfire.
It happened around 1:30 p.m., Thursday when they say Hasan walked into a small room on the post where soldiers get their final medical screening before deployment.
Officials say he was in uniform when he pulled out two handguns including a semi-automatic. The room is very small and at the time was packed with about 500 people. None of the soldiers in the room were armed. They couldn't defend themselves.
The gunshots didn't end until police shot Hasan.
Investigators still do not know why Hasan opened fire. They say he was scheduled for deployment and there are reports he was upset about the deployment.
Hasan is an Army psychiatrist. Officials say there were no indications of problems with Hasan prior to the shooting.
He's a known Muslim, but at this point, officials say the shooting doesn't appear to be political terrorism.
Local, state and federal investigators from are searching through the room where the shooting happened and continue interviewing witnesses.
The post is observing a day of mourning as the investigation continues. About 90 percent of the victim's families have been notified.
About half of the remaining injured required surgery. They are all listed in stable condition. The Army is providing the post with additional grief counselors.
