KYLE, TEXAS - The extension of Marketplace Avenue officially opened on Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The first new road completed under a $36 million bond package passed in 2013 will make it easier for new subdivisions to get to Downtown Kyle without having to go to Interstate 35.

Mayor Todd Webster helped oversee the project, and said the road will make a major impact.

“It probably cuts the travel time in half,” Webster said. “Because you don’t have to go on 35 at all, to get north or south.”

The easier access to downtown will help businesses.

“When we first moved in, there was maybe two other businesses on the Main Street. Other than us,” said Julie Albertson of Texas Pie Company. Julie and her husband Spencer Thomas own the restaurant that’s been in Kyle for 17 years.

“They can come up Burleson Drive and hit the Marketplace, it’s awesome,” Albertson said. “It’s going to open up a whole new avenue for people to come up here and see us.”

Webster added that the road could bring in new businesses in addition to connecting the existing ones.

“It's going to provide us with important economic development opportunity and also in terms of ease of access and ease of traffic congestion in our Old Town area and [Farm to Market] 1626,” he said.

There are five other projects throughout Kyle that are funded by the 2013 bond package. Those projects are expected to be completed in the next three to three-and-a-half years. Construction on the Marketplace extension took about seven months to complete.
