Ya'll know I am not a big fan of buying in bulk. You can usually save more money by shopping with sales and coupons. However, when it comes to spices, that is a whole other story. I love to try new flavors and spices and that leads to experimenting in my house. But sometimes the recipes call for a quarter teaspoon of curry powder or a tablespoon of garlic power. I don't buy the whole jar... only what I need.
Dried herbs and spices rarely go bad, as in make you sick if you use them, but they certainly can lose their flavor over time. Buying spices when you use them makes sense to your bottom line too. Check out the savings on this peppercorn... $1.60 per ounce versus $2.60 per ounce for prepackaged. And the nutmeg, $1.90 per ounce versus $3.33.
I usually go to Whole Foods to buy my spices and literally, you can buy just what you need like a tablespoon or cup or whatever. The savings add up. Check it out the next time you're in there and see what you think. You can also buy flour, sugar, etc just when you need it. Give it a try!
