CNN -- The University of Vermont is getting greener by banning plastic water bottles.
With UVM's beverage contract with Coca-Cola is nearing its end, the administration decided it was time for some healthy changes.
Starting January 2013, the sale of bottled water from vending machines and campus eateries will be banned.
In recent years more than one million bottled beverages were sold on campus annually.
School officials said they believe the school can provide fresh water in Vermont without having to purchase it from some other place.
The plan, which comes with a $100,000 price tag, is to convert all water fountains on campus with a bottle filling station
The new policy also calls for one-third of drinks offered in vending machines to be healthy options.
