AUSTIN -- The Austin Police Department is holding a press conference at 5 p.m. on two officer-involved shootings that left two people dead -- one civilian and one APD officer.
The first shooting happened Thursday in East Austin on Overbrook Drive near 51st Street and Manor around 6:30 p.m.
APD says an officer on patrol stopped a car, but the driver of the car drove away. The driver then pulled over, got out of the car and ran away. The officer chased the driver, who is described as a black man in his 30s. The officer tried to use a taser stun gun on the man, but it wasn't effective. Officials say the officer and the man struggled for control of the officer's gun. The officer then fired one to three shots, killing the driver. Though CPR was performed, he died at the scene.
The department has not released any names in this case.
The second shooting happened early Friday morning at the Walmart store on Parmer Lane and Interstate 35.
APD has identified the officer who was shot and killed as Senior Officer Jaime Padron, 41.
The gunman has been identified as Brandon Montgomery Daniel. The 24-year-old was booked into the Travis County Jail Friday on a capital murder charge.
Investigators say around 2:20 a.m. a 911 call came in reporting a drunk person, Daniel, at the Walmart. Daniel was reportedly starting fights.
Officer Padron responded to the call. When he went inside the store, Daniel immediately started a fight and within seconds pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and shot Padron point-blank, hitting him in the neck. Padron never fired back.
Shortly before he died, however, Padron did call for backup. Store employees held the gunman down until police arrived to arrest him.
