AUSTIN -- Journalism students at the University of Texas now have a state-of-the-art facility to use as they learn their craft. The Belo Center for New Media opened in August and was officially be dedicated Thursday evening.
Named in honor of the vital role that Col. A. H. Belo played in the early days of Texas journalism, the new building provides a more open, interactive environment for more than 4,600 students in the College of Communication. The adjacent Jesse H. Jones Communication Center was built in 1974 to serve just 1,000 students.
The five-story, 120,000 square foot Belo Center cost almost $55 million and features auditoriums, interactive classrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a café. Robert W. Decherd, Chairman, President and CEO of A. H. Belo, says the investment will help classic journalistic principles flourish in a digital media world. Belo is KVUE's parent company.
