AUSTIN -- Austin Pets Alive! is asking for the public's help in caring for puppies rescued from a dumpster and a dog suffering from a gunshot wound.

Covered in mange, two puppies now named Ron and Hermione were found inside a trash bag that had been tossed in a dumpster. Despite the circumstances, APA staff members said the puppies appear healthy, but that it could take a few months to get them back to normal.

"They are young enough with good socialization and have lots of people handle them. They can overcome any fears they might have of people or the situation that they came from," said Ellen Jefferson, executive director of APA.

APA is also accepting donations to help pay for surgery for a dog now named Liza that was injured by a bullet to the leg. They hope to raise about $2,000 for the procedure.
