Animal shelters take in lost pets scared from fireworks shows

AUSTIN -- Austin animal shelters are bracing for the annual surge of cats and dogs frightened by fireworks.

Austin Pets Alive! says in years past they've taken in nearly 200 animals to help out the city's shelter in the days following Independence Day.

They expect at least 50 this year.

The shelter's operations manager says just because the big displays are over doesn't mean we've seen the last of the fourth fireworks.

A three day weekend means more displays will light up the skies this weekend and even into next week.

Faith Wright with Austin Pets Alive! says to crate your animal if you have holiday weekend plans and make sure to keep the animal's tags on.

If your pet does run away, Wright suggests to first visit the "Lost & Found" section of Austin's Craiglist page.

You can also try posting their picture on Facebook.

If those digital searches turn up nothing, you may need to go to area shelters and search the kennels yourself.
