UT soccer play recovers from hit and run

AUSTIN -- A website set up by Kylie Doniak's family said she's awake and breathing on her own.

Doniak is a soccer player that the University of Texas. She was critically injured in a hit and run Feb. 3.  

Doniak is now sitting up and doing her best to communicate through her facial expressions and arm movements.

Doniak was in a medically-induced coma after suffering a brain injury, punctured lung, broken ribs and broken bones in her leg.

There are two ways to help out Doniak's family cover the medical bills:

  • Wednesday, all Austin Chili's restaurants will donated 15 percent of your bill if you tell them it's for Kylie.
  • Donations can also be made at any area Wells Fargo banks

Nicholas Colunga, 22, is charged in the crash. Police said he ran a red light at San Jacinto Boulevard and Eighth Street, hitting Doniak and another woman as they walked through the crosswalk.

Colunga is charged with failure to stop and render aid and intoxication assault.
