Another report of road rage in Austin, this time, with a child in the car.
Craig Smith and his 6-year-old son Keith enjoyed a sunny, spring break afternoon together Wednesday.
"Can you stack one more on top of those without them falling," Smith asks his son.
But last Tuesday afternoon, both feared for their lives.
"This was the most traumatic thing I've ever been through in my life," said Smith.
Smith had just picked up his son at Cowan Elementary. They made their way up Kentish Drive and, after seeing no cars coming in either direction, Smith turned westbound onto Davis Lane, a small, two-lane road with a posted speed of 25 miles per hour. But after only traveling a tenth of a mile....
"I look in my rear view mirror and see a white truck flying up onto me and the next thing I feel is him just ramming into me," said Smith.
With cars routinely speeding up and down Davis Lane, Smith says he thought the driver of this white, 3/4 ton, Chevy pick up truck -- that he photographed after the collision-- may have hit him by accident while attempting to pass. But Smith says after the pick up driver proceeded to ram him four more times he's convinced this was no accident.
"It seemed like he went crazy because it was just intentionally ram my vehicle, push it a long ways, ram it against it, a long ways, it was sliding sideways, rammed it again, I had spun out and he rammed it again from the side, the distance he pushed was incredible and honestly it was the scariest moment of my life," said Smith.
Smith says at the speed the pick up was traveling, it's amazing he and his son survived.
"All this impact with all this force happened less than three-feet from my son," said Smith.
Smith says his son was in his car seat in the back seat, and that the only time the pickup driver stopped ramming his car is when smith jumped out and yelled stop, stop, my son is the back seat.
Smith says he would like to see the pickup driver charged with attempted manslaughter.
Again, APD says the incident is under investigation, but at this time no charges have been filed.
