General Motors announced Thursday that Austin and New York City will be the first cities to sell the Chevy Volt.
“Austin is one of America’s greenest cities so it just makes sense to offer the Volt’s unique technology to consumer here first,” said Ed Whitacre, General Motors Chairman and CEO.
The electric engine powered car gets 40 miles on a single charge before a gas engine kicks in. The Volt should be in Austin showrooms by November and roll out to the rest of the state over the following months.
GM employees left Austin for a 1,776 mile trip from Austin to New York as part of the announcement. The crew should end up there July 4th.
GM plans to produce 10,000 Volts by the end of 2011 and another 30,000 the following year. The car will be available in all 50 states in a year to 18 months after the initial limited roll out.
