As the cold front moved into Central Texas Tuesday, it was a race against the clock to get nearly 100 dogs at the Williamson County Humane Society moved into a temporary indoor shelter.
“We are working fast to get everyone in out of the cold before the freezing weather comes,” said Gina Benner, animal care manager.
A permanent cold weather shelter is two months behind schedule and short on cash. The Humane Society is turning to the public for help.
“We need money to get this building completed, that's really the main need we have,” said Executive Director Ron Marullo.
This week the shelter had to spend nearly $4000 on an emergency.
“Our well pump failed on Sunday and we had to get that repaired because with this facility, (with) 100 dogs (and) 80 cats, we need water. We got to clean kennels,” said Marullo.
The money used to replace the well was to buy a heater for the dogs' new winter shelter. Now the Non-Profit is looking at ways to recoup the money.
“We're still raising quite a bit of money for the electric, completing the plumbing as well as getting the kennels built, “ Marullo said. “We need about $40,000 to complete the building.”
For now, these dogs have a warm place to sleep as cramped as it may be, and hopefully one day soon, their new living quarters will be completed.
“It would be a great holiday gift,” said Marullo.
