A new partnership launched this weekend to unite Austin runners and dogs in need of some exercise.
A non-profit running group called Team Spiridon worked with Austin Pets Alive to create the Jog-A-Dog program.
Interested volunteers can drop by APA’s South Austin shelter at 2807 Manchaca Road anytime the facility is open.
“When you exercise them it calms them and gets them socialized,” said Team Spiridon runner Cindy Castaneda.
Runners can take dogs any reasonable distance as long as the temperature is not above 90 degrees. During the hot summer months early mornings or evenings work best.
While runners get exercise, the dogs also get an added benefit.
“This really gives them an outlet and makes them better behaved at adoption sites, and more likely to be adopted,” said APA employee Savannah Lightfoot.
APA’s South Austin facility has room for 60 dogs. Lightfoot says about 85 percent need a running partner.
“It's a total blast. There are a lot of dogs who just need a little extra love and attention,” APA volunteer and runner Chris Summers said.
Team Spiridon’s primary goal is to raise money for animal groups including Austin Pets Alive and the Austin Humane Society. Executive Director Rob Hill says the Jog-A-Dog program was a natural fit.
“They really need that exercise. It makes them better balanced, more adjusted, and therefore more adoptable,” Summers said.
Runners also get another bonus beyond exercise. They also get a discount card for Bettysport and Hill Country Running Company. Once volunteers run 10 dogs they get a $25 gift card for either Bettysport or Hill Country Running Company.
RuffWear donated special leashes for the program.
