AUSTIN -- Flowers, balloons, and cards line a memorial site in Northwest Austin where a Texas State University student died Friday morning.
Enrique Recio, 23, went to the home of Fred Yazdi, 47, Friday morning after crashing his car on Avery Ranch Boulevard.
According to court documents released by Williamson County District Attorney John Bradley, Yazdi told officers he shot and killed Recio after finding Recio in front of his home.
According to Austin Police Detective Rogelio Sanchez, Yazdi's wife told officers she heard voices outside her home around 3 a.m., saw a man under her vehicle, and woke up her husband. She then went upstairs with her children and called 911.
She told officers she never heard gunshots. However, Yazdi admitted to police that he shot Recio. He described going outside the home and finding the man. He said he told Recio not to flee, and if he did, he would shoot. Yazdi said Recio started to run away, so he fired.
Police say Recio died on the sidewalk in front of Yazdi’s house. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, hip and inner thigh.
Police found bullet shells in the driveway and a 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun in the house.
Officers arrested Yazdi on Friday and charged him with murder, a first degree felony. He posted bail over the weekend and was released. Yazdi is being tried in Williamson County.
Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m.
