Austin police are investigating the death of a three-year-old girl who died Friday from injuries she suffered five weeks earlier.
Police say Sergio Godinez-Islas, 28, admitted to injuring Eliano Razo, 3, when he threw her onto a futon on Oct. 27.
Godinez-Islas was charged with Injury to a Child right after the incident.
Razo was in Godinez-Islas’ care while her mother was working.
“Even when caregivers are family and friends and people that you know, it’s important to evaluate their ability in high-stress circumstances and circumstances where you may have a (child) that cries a lot. That's what some babies do,” said Amanda Van Hoozer of Austin's Center for Child Protection.
In 2009, five children in Travis County died from abuse. Numbers for 2010 will not be available until the end of the year.
