AUSTIN - Austin Police said Friday evening that detectives do not believe that alcohol was involved in a tragic accident which killed a 6-year old boy, as was initially believed.

It happened at the Kiestone Apartments off of Cameron Road and U.S. 183 around 4:30 p.m. Friday.  The driver of an SUV who lived at the apartments was turning into the complex when police say he swerved to avoid an open door of a parked vehicle.  When that happened, the driver accidentally ran over a 6-year old boy who was playing in the parking lot with his older brother.

“I know his brother is probably hurting right now for what happened to his brother. The mother is probably heart broken she just lost her youngest son. I don't know the feeling of how that feels but I know it's probably really upsetting for her,” said Celeste Lozoya, a friend of the family.

The driver was transported to the hospital for unknown reasons but onlookers said he looked like he was having a heart attack.

“Very nervous, very nervous. Shaking. Jittery. Crying,” said Sheri Marshall.

Friday evening, police had not released the name of the victim nor the driver.

This is Austin’s 11th traffic fatality for 2012.
