It can sometimes be hard to find a home for dogs who were neglected and abused. But not so in this case.
"When we opened the doors today, there were more than 50 people here, ready and wanting to meet those chihuahuas," said Austin Humane Society Director of Development Amanda Ryan-Smith.
Round Rock Animal Control seized 13 chihuahuas on May 6, 2010 as part of an animal cruelty case. On Saturday, 10 were healthy enough to be put up for adoption.
"I absolutely fell in love with him," said Gracie Gonzalez.
Gonzalez was one of the first to arrive.
"I was number 11 when I got here," she said.
She's hoping her chocolate and tan chihuahua "Rex" will get along with Koga. He's a little black one that was rescued in Round Rock. But it may take some time.
Cindy Furlan is an Animal Care Specialist for the Austin Humane Society.
"With so many dogs in a home, it's very hard to give individualized attention. They're not quite as socialized as we'd like to see," she said.
Gonzalez said it took Koga about an hour to warm up to her. But it didn't take that long for the two dogs to find their boundaries.
"I think it's going to work out well," said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez knows it will take patience.
"Whoever comes out here and adopts these dogs patience is a big quality they have to have with these dogs that have been abused," she said.
But it will be worth it to give the little dogs who were once neglected a loving home.
