You can help Schlotzsky's break a Guinness World Record, and get a free sandwich

The Austin sandwich restaurant chain has been trying to get 2,604 people to paint a big mural on the side of its restaurant in South Austin.

AUSTIN - In honor of its 46th birthday, Austin-born restaurant Schlotzsky's is attempting to break a Guinness World Record.

The Austin eatery needs at least 2,604 people to help them break the record for most contributions to a painting by numbers. And as of Sunday, they're about 300 people shy from reaching their goal.

The mural will honor Schlotzsky’s Austin heritage.

"People wanted to pick certain squares that they would remember where it was -- like I know I did one of the pink squares right in here, so when I come back I know ok I contributed to that piece of this mural," said Schlotzsky's representative Lindsay Haynes.

The weekend long celebration kicked off on Friday, after the city of Austin claimed October 6 "Schlotzsky's Day."

Schlotzsky’s at 218 South Lamar Blvd is hosting the festivities.

All weekend long, a Schlotzsky's branded double-decker bus will be picking up participants from all over the city, operating from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Official verification with a certified Guinness World Records adjudicator will be Sunday, October 8 at 11 p.m. Sunday. Haynes said they hope people leaving ACL Fest will stop by to help them accomplish their goal.
